Phineas, according to Ben, hit a wall about fifteen minutes before Watson and I returned to the Cozy Corgi. He’d received so much attention from all the Cozy Corgi patrons, played so hard and had so much fun that right in the middle of it, he lay down and fell asleep. Ben had carried him over to the mystery room sofa and laid him down.

That was where Watson and I found him. I was thankful Ben had been thoughtful enough to avoid having Phineas take a nap on Watson’s ottoman. The little guy was sprawled partially on his back with his left hind leg straight up in the air, his head upside down, floppy ears laying out straight over the curve of the clear cone.

Watson trotted over, sniffed carefully, then seemed satisfied. I was fairly certain he was checking to make sure Phineas was okay, but possibly he was sniffing to see if Phineas had been in his apartment without his permission.

Leaving him be, Watson and I went up to the bakery—it was well past time for my first dirty chai of the day.

Watson’s day kept getting better and better. Time alone with his mama, then his favorite buffalo jerky from his favorite grumpy detective, and now… Pearl! At the sight of Katie and Athena sitting side by side in one of the booths at the far side of the bakery, Watson pranced puppy-like to Athena’s purse.

A few seconds before he reached his destination, Pearl’s fuzzy white head popped out the top—pink ribbons on her ears. She gave a happy bark and leaped out of the purse to meet him.

Watson glanced over his shoulder. At first I thought he was looking at me, but then I decided he’d been afraid Pearl’s bark would bring Phineas storming up to ruin their date.

When the coast was clear, the two greeted each other—sniffing of noses, rear ends, and much spinning, circling, and hopping.

“Almost enough to make you want to have a love life.” Athena smiled down at them, resplendent in a scarlet dress under a blue tweed jacket and matching heels. “But as I’ve said before—” She flicked a French-tipped finger between Katie and me. “—you two took the last decent men left on the face of the earth.” She paused, craning to see if Nick had heard, if she needed to remedy that comment, but no fix was required.

Katie leaned forward to see past Athena, her eyes wide. “You have news, don’t you?” She fluttered her hand. “What am I saying, of course you do. You dropped off Phineas and then rushed away to the police station.” She paused long enough to check in with Athena. “Mind if we come back to the blog later? I want details.”

“Darling—” Athena shut the laptop and pushed it away. “—so do I.”

“I’ll give them to you.” I paused as I passed the still spinning dogs and patted Pearl’s back. She gave an obligatory lick before refocusing on Watson. “However, Katie, I’m in desperate need of—”

“On it!” She looked back at Athena.
